Life can sometimes seem like an uphill struggle.
Right when everything seems to be going your way, the Universe throws you a curve ball. It could be in the form of an accident, illness, someone letting you down, falling out with a friend, the end of a relationship, losing a job or any other scenario that knocks you down and changes your focus.
It is often at this point that well meaning people in your life give the advice to look to the positive, be grateful for what you do have, “keep your chin up” and other words that are meant to comfort, but actually rub salt in to the wound.
After all, you've just had bad news or a bad situation that sucks and you feel anything but great! At this point, you have every right to rant and vent and cry and throw all your toys out of the pram. Because at this point you really don't want to look for the good or think positive thoughts or put your rose tinted glasses on.
At this point you need to accept how you feel.
YOUR FEELINGS ARE VALID!
Many of us have been brought up to not show our anger, or create a scene or to express our emotions.
We may hide our tears, clam up rather than speak out and push those negative feelings deep inside, rather than let them surface.
But guess what … No amount of positive thinking, on top of stifled emotions, is going to work!
ACKNOWLEDGE AND ACCEPT HOW YOU FEEL.
By doing so you empower yourself to be able to release the hold those emotions have over you. By fully feeling them, accepting you have them and allowing them a voice, you can free yourself from them.
YOU NEED TO LET THE EMOTIONS OUT!
Preferably in positive ways – such as beating pillows, going for a run or exercise class, writing your feelings in a journal, taking a walk in nature, singing opera at the top of your voice, screaming in your car with the windows closed (or open – your choice!)… you get the idea!
Once you have expressed yourself and let the negative stuff out, then you can look to lift your vibration.
That's when positive thoughts, affirmation and visualisations can start to work for you.
And remember to do plenty of the things you love and enjoy. Have some fun, share a joke, hug a friend, have a coffee or a bubble bath or whatever lifts your spirits... and soon you will find that you are able to smell the roses again.
